Search Engine Optimization

Title Tags, Meta Tags and Text Optimisation

Search engines look at the titles, meta tags, and the text contained within a website. These elements help determine how the engine will rank that site. It's important these things right!

The Title Tag
You should have only one, in the HEAD section, at the top of every single page on your site. Just in case you dont know how this tag should look, the one at the top of this page looks like this:

<title>ISPSubmit - FREE Website promotion tips. Title tags, meta tags, and text optimisation</title>

It's important to give a good idea of whats actually on the page within the title, and not just put something like 'My page', 'page1', or something else that gives no information. The best advise I can give you is to include words and phrases in the title that people will actually use in searches.

Meta Tags
There are two main meta tags, the keyword tag and the description tag. Both of these should be placed at the top of every page, between the HEAD tags. Save time and use our FREE Meta Tag creator, just fill out the form and simple cut and paste. We do all the work.

For those who don't know what these tags look like, the keyword tag on this page looks like this:

<META name="KEYWORDS" content="promotion, website, site, rank, search engines, meta tags, text, title, titles, tags, title tags, H1, H2, H1 tag, H2 tag, alt tag, optimisation, search engine optimisation">

The description tag looks like this:

<META name="DESCRIPTION" content="Optimize your site using these search engine optimization tips">

The keywords you choose should be relevant to the page, and the keywords that you choose should be supported by the text of that page. Also, keep your keywords in lower case, as some search engines are case sensitive. Use plurals as well as singular words...e. g. 'search engines' as well as 'search engine'. Another good idea is to use short phrases such as 'SEO optimization', while also using 'search', 'engine' and 'optimization'.

The description should be concise, while still giving a good idea of what information is presented on the main page. This is what will appear in the site description on many search engines, thus driving clicks to your site.

H1 and H2 Tags
Another very important set of tags to pay attention to, are the 'H1' and 'H2' tags. Most people use the FONT tag to create larger text for headings and important text. However, many search engines will rank sites higher if they use H1 and H2 for important and relevant text.

ALT Tags
The ALT tag is used to give a description of an image or image link. A few search engines look at the text contained within this tag when ranking a site, so it can pay to load the tag up with suitable keywords or phrases.

The ALT tag for the logo at the top of this page looks like this:

<img src="/images/kiwi_key.jpg" alt="search engine optimization" width="47" height="23" border="0">

Copy or Main Text
The search engines base most of their decision regarding your keywords in this section. Make sure you have plenty of keywords in the main text of your site, while still making sense. Don't go overboard - adding too many keywords just strung together could be considered 'spamming' and your ranking lowered.

Also, its the first few lines that count. The higher up a page your keywords appear in the text, the more clout they have. This can be a pain if you use tables, as the first few lines will be used in setting these up, but I guess you cant have everything.
